- Club and concert hall in a flak tower
You reach it by going up, which is not how bunker clubs usually work. Uebel & Gefährlich occupies the fourth floor of the Feldstraße bunker, a wartime flak tower on the Heiligengeistfeld in St. Pauli, and has done since 2006, when Tino Hanekamp co-founded it. There are two rooms: the Ballsaal, the main hall, and the smaller Turmzimmer, the tower room, used for intimate concerts and as a second floor on party nights. Together they hold about 1,000. The walls are as thick as you would expect and the neighbours are not much of a problem. The programme is broad, taking in live shows from people as different as Sia, Scooter and Billie Eilish alongside club nights, and it won the Hamburg Club Award for music club of the year in 2011, 2015 and 2019. House is one strand of the programme and not the whole of it. The building itself has since been redeveloped, with a public garden on its roof. The club carries on inside.
