Keith Reilly and Cameron Leslie opened fabric on 29 October 1999 in the arches opposite Smithfield Market. Three rooms, each with its own sound system, and a capacity of 1,600. Room One has the party trick, a vibrating dancefloor with sections mounted on 400 bass transducers, so that the low end comes up through your shins. The fabric and FABRICLIVE mix CD series began in 2001 and ran for years, and it did as much as the club to teach people what a London DJ set was. In September 2016, after two drug-related deaths, Islington Council revoked the licence and the place was announced as closed for good. A campaign raised over 200,000 pounds for legal costs, and in November the club and council agreed conditions including photo ID, surveillance and lifetime bans for dealing or possession. It reopened in January 2017. In 2024 its old exterior sign went to the new London Museum, and in October 2026 it marked 27 years with a 30-hour programme across four days. The queue is still on Charterhouse Street.
